Joey Finnz is a musical visionary — producer, audio engineer, DJ and drummer — he brings inspirational and creative energy to every production. With over a thousand concerts and events performed or mixed to perfection, Joey knows how to make every event resonate.
Joey has spent his life on a deep journey through performance, composition, sound engineering and production. He’s had the privilege to study drum set with the legendary and late master instructor, Bob Gulotti of Berklee College of Music and Jazz trio, The Fringe. In addition to studying with Bob, Joey is also grateful for his time spent with latin percussionist, audio engineer and producer, Pablo Bencid.
With a strong passion for audio engineering, Joey started down this path and attended The New England Institute of Art, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Audio and Media Technology. He spent his college career as a youth mentor with Zumix’s Z-Tech program. It was at Zumix where Joey met Dan Fox of Wondersmith Audio. From there, he dove into the industry, interning at Boston’s Cybersound Recording Studio under the owner Perry Geyer, and later at Chillhouse Studios under the guidance of Chief Engineer Will Holland. Shortly after engineering at recording studios, Joey took the position as house engineer for the award winning salsa venue, Havana Club, and Boston’s premiere Jazz club and restaurant, The Beehive. He spent several years working with some of the most talented musicians the area has to offer. Two of the most notable ensembles are Zili Misik, led by Kera Washington, and Cincoson, which includes members Alex Alvear, Angel Subero, Gonzalo Grau, Manolo Mairena, Pablo Bencid and Vincente Lebron. As an accolade to Joey’s audio engineering, he is the recording engineer of record for Debo Band’s live album “Pink Bird Dawn” recorded at the Western Front in Cambridge. This live album led to the band’s signing with Sub Pop Records, a marked moment for Joey’s engineering. He currently serves as a member on the executive committee for the Boston chapter of the Audio Engineering Society.
On drums, Joey is a powerhouse, having performed with the bands Novena (post-hardcore), The Avenue Tricks (rock and roll), Baeja Vu (live hip-hop), and led the funky soul band The Deep Rumble. He often substituted for local pro drummer, Zeke Martin, at a dive bar staple, The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, for their weekly Wednesday night open jam where the local community of musicians were invited to sit in. It was at the Cantab that Joey met synth keyboard extraordinaire, Christian Erickson. Together, and as way to cope during the pandemic, they formed the avant-garde acoustelectronica project Mordent.IO. Joey has recently joined the Brazilian Carnival band Grooversity, a multicultural collective of percussionists of all ages and abilities.
As a DJ, Joey has carved out his place with the warm and inclusive dance music collective, the Basement Project, where he lends his musical talents and industry experience to a passionate crowd of creatives and music lovers. He’s been a standout performer at major Harvard Square events, including the 39th Annual May Fair, where he was the first DJ in festival history. He’s also brought his mixes to Harvard Square’s Chocolate Festival, Illuminated Halloween Festival, and Somerville and Watertown Porch Festivals, in addition to other numerous public and private parties.
In his studio, Joey creates original tracks that shape his distinctive and multifaceted style. His music, which spans a range of sounds, is a tool for connection and self-discovery. Joey believes deeply in the healing power of music and its ability to open doors, bridge generations and connect us all. With every project, he combines precision, passion, and a relentless drive to shape sound that truly resonates with his fans.
